(UPDATED) Andre 3000 Cast As Jim Hendrix In Biopic ‘All By My Side’
UPDATE – Late Thursday Night, Hendrix Experience LLC (the estate that owns and manages the Hendrix brand run by Hendrix’s sister Janie) issued the following statement:
Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.
It turns out the producers don’t really care as they have no plans to use any of his music. According to Deadline:
The Darko film will get around the music by centering on his origins and young life: it will detail Hendrix growing up in Seattle, joining the Army, playing in back-up bands throughout the South and with the Isley Brothers and Little Richard among others.
I think this a great workaround and quite frankly really sticks it to the estate that is really acting a little bit ridiculous. Sometimes sticking to your guns just a little too much can kill a brand and the more people that know just how crazy talented Jimi Hendrix was, the better.
With the it being in pure rumour mode for the last bit, it is now confirmed that Outkast‘s Andre 3000 will be playing the guitar god (and my personal favourite) Jimi Hendrix in All By My Side, a biopic of the life of a music icon whose life was cut way to short.
Nothing is known of the movie outside of the casting. Andre 3000 (whose real name is Andre Benjamin) will be joined by Haley Atwell and Imogen Poots with John Ridley directing the movie based on his own original screenplay.
Production is set to start later this month in Ireland, and I for one and am happy to hear this news and am very, very, very much looking forward to this film.
