It might have seemed like a good idea at the time, however the counter-programming of the billion dollar duo of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton was no match for the juggernaut that is Marvel’s The Avengers as it approaches the $1 billion dollars mark powered by a second record-breaking weekend.
Dark Shadows‘ estimated $28M was easily no match as The Avengers set a second weekend record pulling in a humungous $28M on its way to a $100M weekend. Still playing very wide at 4,349 theatres, Marvel’s The Avengers now passes Avatar‘s and the Dark Knight‘s $75M records.
According to Deadline, coming into Friday the Joss Whedon-directed blockbuster was dominating the tickets sales at MovieTickets.com with 75% of tickets sold going to superhero supermovie. Disney has already confirmed that, (unless something spikes on Friday), the film will pass $300M domestically on Saturday in a record 8 days.
8 days.
By the end of Sunday, the domestic box office tally should be around $355M. With the international gross currently sitting at $533.M the movie has currently brought in a global cumulative of $888.3M. Disney thinks $1B is a lock for the end of the weekend.
Stay tuned as more develops however, this ride is just getting started and with this second weekend being as strong as it is, the rest of the movies opening up this summer have their work cut out for them.
And of course, we the fans will benefit from all of it.
