RZA‘s passion project The Man With The Iron Fists is finally upon us. Having surprised a lot of people (including myself), all of the marketing materials we have seen have shown us that he has taken this great cast featuring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu and given us the perfect homage to kung-fu movies blending the martial arts and hip-hop.
And his latest bit of marketing is no different.
The rapper/actor/filmmaker teamed up with animation director Eric Calderon (co-producer of the Afro Samurai TV mini-series) to give us a three-minute prequel called The Encounter. In it we get a bit of the backstory of his character including how he ended up in Asia as well as his first meeting with the indestructible ‘Brass Body’ played in the movie by ex-WWE star Dave Bautista, (check out his character trailer here).
Check it out below and tell me its not one of the coolest bits of movie marketing in a long while.
The Man With The Iron Fists opens November 2nd.
About the Film Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director and leading man, RZA—alongside a stellar international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu—tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all.
Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.
Blending astonishing martial-arts sequences from some of the masters of this world with the signature vision he brings as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan and as one of hip-hop’s most dominant figures of the past two decades, RZA embarks upon his most ambitious, stylized and thrilling project to date. www.ironfists.com Check out our ongoing coverage: - RZA Talks About ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ In These Two Featurettes - 16 Different Official Posters For ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’. - Stream The Ridiculously Dope Full Soundtrack To ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ - A Character In RZA’s @IronFists Is Called Brass Body? This has nothing but dopeness written all over it.
The highly popular cartoon series Afro Samurai is being made into a live-action adaptation with the voice of the Afro Samurai jumping on as a producer.
With a built in cult-like following, Afro Samurai successfully blending hip-hop, Japanese culture and some seriously ridiculous fight sequences into an anime smorgasbord that resulted in an addictive fun animated series.
This is definitely a passion project for Jackson as he has no need to make this into a movie and he backs that up:
”This has been one of my very favorite properties ever since our amazing debut at Comic Con with the original series pilot out of Japan. I can’t wait to produce the epic feature film version.”
As of right now, this is just an idea as there is no director or writer attached to the project. For this to get my stamp of approval, the next thing I need to hear is that the Wu-Tang Clan‘s RZA has signed on to compose the music for it.
Once I hear that I will be ALL in.
