[UPDATED] – There had been word that two teasers were playing in front of TDKR, one with the voice of Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent narrating and the other with the voice of Russell Crowe narrating as Jor-El. Well turns out there is.

During Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con panel, the studio revealed new artwork for director Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel and teased the film by showing  the first footage from the film. There was also a very intriguing Q&A where some interesting answers were given.

While it might seem that all the heavy lifting is done this summer movie season with Marvel’s The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and many other films already having opened up to boffo box office numbers. We are not done.

Not by a long-shot.

Still left are Total Recall, The Bourne Legacy and one of the biggest, most-anticipated films of this, the last, and the year before that.

Of course I am speaking of the (quite literally) epic conclusion to the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy The Dark Knight Rises. We have been covering this film for a few years now and it seems very surreal that it is less than two weeks away until the movie opens (to what is already ridiculous box office numbers).

And of course Xavierpop will be counting down to opening with some of the best trailers, images and other stuff that will totally get you in the mood, (like you really need our help).

First off is this ridiculously awesome 13 minute featurette that was released over the weekend. For those of you who are afraid of being spoilered before you go in to the film, fear not, there is nothing really new here. It is a rehash of all the trailers and a few commercials with a bunch of production still interspersed with interviews from the folks behind the scenes (including Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and the man himself Christopher Nolan). The unique thing about this featurette is that it is pretty damn awesome. It easily captures the feeling of the film and quite frankly I went from getting a little tired of all of the marketing stuff being dropped to a guy who remembered why he is a such a huge fan of this series.

Check it out above and see you opening night, if you managed to grab a ticket.

Marvel’s The Avengers just kicked-off the summer movie season by smashing the all-time opening weekend record with its incredible $200 million haul in North America while raking in over a half billion worldwide.

Do the offerings this season look promising enough to shatter the record $4.5 billion from last year’s May to Labor Day period that featured Harry Potter, Bridesmaids, MI:IV, Transformers 3, The Hangover 2, Cars 2, Thor and Captain America, among others? Here at Xavierpop, we certainly think so.

The summer of 2012 looks to be about the busiest summer cycle in recent years. Lined not only with the usual suspects ranging from huge comic book and TV adaptations, big blockbusters and/or their sequels, new and highly-anticipated animated flicks and big comedies, there are plenty of choice all the way down the line to the mid-tempo and specialized markets with a number of indies, docs and foreign films with big names attached to them. The big boppers aren’t only bigger but so is the pedigree of the “smaller” films.

Here is Xavierpop’s special rundown of all the summer flicks you need to know about. Where to begin? Of course:

BLOCKBUSTERS

If there is any movie that can knock Hunger Games out of the #1 spot this year, it’s Marvel’s The Avengers. And if there’s only one film that can beat that, it must be The Dark Knight Rises (Jul.20). Batman Begins was excellent entertainment, and The Dark Knight was this trilogy’s version of The Empire Strikes Back - on the shortlist of best sequels of all time. Christopher Nolan closes out his epic series with the additions of Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Tom Hardy as the villain, Bane.

About as highly-anticipated as the third installment of Batman is the brand new rebooting of The Amazing Spider-Man (Jul.6). Out with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, in with Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and Andrew Garfield (The Social Network). Emma Stone takes the place of Kirsten Dunst; Martin Sheen and Sally Field lend their chops as Peter Parker‘s grandparents. It looks no-worse than the Sam Raimi three, but will it improve upon those? The trailer looks magnificent.

If the top 3 seem to belong to fanboys, than it’s girl-power all the way in What to Expect When You’re Expecting (May.18) and Pixar’s Brave (Jun.22) as two of the likeliest contenders for fourth-highest grossing pic of the summer, or, first among the rest.

“What to Expect…” stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Banks, among many others in this comedy about young expecting couples. Adventures in pregnancy are well-suited to adult female audiences, but men will find themselves in attendance as well with Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock among the many fine male comic actors here. It’s a perfect storm of material and appealing stars with this one and should wind up with the same big tally of $170 million that Bridesmaids took in, and could even surpass that mark.

It would be a lesser summer season without a Pixar contribution, and Brave boasts a terrific ad campaign with a stellar voice ensemble that includes Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kelly MacDonald, John Ratzenberger (Hamm, the Piggy Bank in Toy Story), Robbie Coltrane and Craig Ferguson.

In the next bracket are 4 big sequels that will try to crack the elusive $200 million mark: the family faves Ice Age: Continental Drift (Jul.13) and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (Jun.8), and the adventure flicks Men in Black III (May.25) and The Bourne Legacy (Aug.3). The voices of Ray Romano and Denis Leary are back in Ice Age 4, and so too are Chris Rock and Ben Stiller in Madagascar. Josh Brolin‘s the younger Tommy Lee Jones in MIB3 with its intriguing Back to the Future-esque plot and Jeremy Renner takes the reigns from Matt Damon in the Bourne series, though the writing/directing team remains intact.

Peter Berg scored big with The Kingdom and Hancock, and he’ll look to do so again with the epic Battleship (May.18) with John Carter heartthrob Taylor Kitsch leading another $200 million production along with Liam Neeson and Rihanna.

Ridley Scott returns to Alien territory for the first time in over three decades with Prometheus (Jun.8) and a star-studded cast including Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Alba and Guy Pearce. Here’s hoping it’s more Alien than Sphere.

Total Recall (Aug.3) gets a reboot, this time with Paul Verhoeven out and Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) in the director’s chair. Will Colin Farrel be able to take Arnie’s place? We’ll see. Also starring Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston and Jessica Biel.

If Mirror Mirror was too cornball for your liking, than have no fear because Snow White and the Huntsman (Jun.1) is almost here. And it looks rather bad-ass, with Charlize Theron in her second big summer perf, this time as the Evil Queen and Kristen Stewart as Snow White.

Meryl Streep and director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) team up again for Hope Springs (Aug 10), the marital dramedy also starring Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell and Elisabeth Shue. Their first feature together reaped $125 million at the domestic box office and netted Streep her 14th Oscar nomination at the time, which is, like, sooooo 2007 because she’s been nominated three more times and has won one since.

Adam Shankman‘s going to try to do for the 80′s in Rock of Ages (Jun.15) what he did for the 60′s with his previous hit Hairspray. This one stars Tom Cruise as fictional 80′s power balladeer Stacee Jaxx, along with Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

With the summer movie season trucking along nicely, a lot of attention is now (and justifiably) being focused on Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises, the last chapter in his epic Batman trilogy. To keep the conversation going, the good folks at Warner Bros just released a new poster on their Facebook page. It is a nice little extension of the teaser poster they gave us a while back. It integrates the Gotham blowing up theme we saw with the last trailer and is doing a lovely job of making July 20th want to happen right now.

Check out the image below and let me know what you think? Are you as hyped for the movie as we are. (It’s ok Avengers and the Amazing Spiderman, I still love you).

The Dark Knight Rises also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, and Marion Cotillard. It opens on July 20.
