First trailer of the Judge Dredd comic book reboot Dredd has dropped and I have very mixed feelings about this one. Out of all the movies, this one could definitely use a reboot because while the Stallone version was ok, it wasn’t all that true to the comic.
The trailer starts out very well and frames the story with Lena Hedley as the baddie (and looking quite lovely doing it). Love the premise and more importantly how they film it. It’s a great, original idea that has definite potential. Then Dredd, (played by Karl Urban) comes onto the screen and something seems off. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Urban’s from even before his inspired, brilliant job on Abram’s Star Trek. But something seems off. Not sure if it’s his voice, his costume or the fact that we don’t really have a set-up for his character.
Then the plot reveals itself and apparently we are watching The Raid : Redemption starring Judge Dredd. If that is the case, then the filmmakers have made a huge mistake because really nothing can beat the badassosity of the one of the best films this year.
I guess we will have to see with the next trailer and stuff, however, even though I love Urban and am eager to see thi movie rebooted properly, I haz a bad feeling about this.
About the Film Dredd takes place on a fictional Earth created as a result of the Atomic Wars. Survivors of this period are living in Mega-Cities, which protects its citizens from the Cursed Earth, a radioactive desert environment populated by mutants. The main story takes place in Mega-City One, where the police who are now called judges have the power to use police brutality to some extent to fight extreme murders. One man, Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), a senior law enforcement officer, teams up with a cadet called Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to track down a terrorist organization lead by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), who is responsible for selling a reality-altering drug called Slo-Mo.
