When it was announced that Russel Peters had joined a movie about a group of East Indians playing hockey, there was quite literally a collective WTF that occurred across the conversation media landscape. A movie like this has the potential to really, really suck because most of these low-budget films are really bad. Every once in awhile there are these gems that come out of  this level of indie cinema, however those are very, very few and far between.

The first trailer for Breakaway starring Russell Peters, Rob Lowe and a pretty fantastic cast of south Asian actors has just dropped and I am happy to say it looks good.

Really, really good.

While the movie might still suck due to its indie nature, this trailer gives me hope that we might just have a hit here in the same vein as a certain big, fat Greek wedding nature.

What say you?

Russell Peters is definitely a Torontonian who has done his city proud.  An absolutely brilliant comedian who has managed to become a voice of a generation in a few short years.  We are all behind him because he worked his ass off, crafted his talent and gone on to conquer the world.

So this latest news, courtesy of Toronto Life, that he is in a new movie movie with Rob Lowe produced by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is a pretty fantastic.

The story will obviously be a cross-cultural immigration comedy about a Sikh family in Canada and is aptly being called Breakway, so we can only imagine that it will  have some kind of major storyline around hockey.

There isn’t else much known about it. No matter, I am ALL in.

Oh and you’re damn straight we’ll be doing a screening to support it.
